A Design/Engineering Spin on CSSZengarden

13 06 2005

Say hello to CSS factory. Christian Heilmann talks about a new project that popped out of his brain and landed on his blog. In this entry he talks about the need for a more practical application of the CSS wizardry that comes out of CSSZengarden. he calls for designers and tech guy to come to gether to display their skills at making such a system work.

I differ with him in one major way. It is not the CMS but the template system that is integrated into the CMS that is the real issue here. How good of a solution can the tech present to the designer? And can the designer take advantage of such a system to create the practical layouts with the ability to change them at a whim? I have always seen this a a seperate solution from the CMS system itself. I see it as a template system.

There are a cornucopia of CMS solutions out there. We do not need a better CMS, we need a better way to present content. I say Chris shoudl focus his idea to a template system, not a CMS.

Hear hear… totally agree!! That’s why i’m currently busy thinking out a “template” based log “module” in Coldfusion.

The CMS is not the problem.. that’s the easy part.. the hard part is creating one or several templates (xHTML) where the code layout is ordered in such a way that you can do with CSS what he/she wants and on the other hand, have templates that are clearly readible by any screenreader.

Actully my opinion on this has been greatly influenced by what wordpress has done on this subject. You can do a lot with the templates making your page very dynamic and as standards compliant as you want. It’s hard to explain but the system allows me to change the look of the site at a whim with no trouble at all.
