Remembrance of Star Wars

2 12 2005

I was reading my friends blog and he wrote a review of the new release of Star Wars. It got me thinking… remembering.

Every time I think of the orgininal Star Wars I remember going to the city (manhattan for those of you that are not New Yorkers) to the … oh damn I forget the name of the theatre but it’s that famous one for movies in mid-townZeigfeld to see Star Wars. There were People in costums, there was specticle even before the lights went out. I was a little kid squirming in my seat waiting, eating too much of the popcorn, for the lights to go out. Looking up at my dad. The lights went out and I fell into a world that swallowed me whole. I still get chills.

Since then the “lightSaber” was a constant childhood weapon my brother, my pals, and I used to sword fight. When “Empire” came out it was Yoda’s voice, “Rubber am I, glue are you, affected me you have not”.

Man it’s fun going down memory lane. Till next time my fellow Jedi. cya!

I remember going to the now-defunct RKO Keiths in Flushing Main Street to see Star Wars for the 1st time. It was overwhelming. Trying to recapture even a fraction of that sense of awe becomes more difficult as we get older. However, it’s still the feeling I hope to get at the movies.

My aunt had decided to take me to the movie, and I didnt even have an idea what it was about. We pulled up to the theatre here in Boise Idaho, I stared in shock as there was a line that went clear around the building. After searching for a parking spot for nearly 20 minutes, we walked up to the back of the line, and waited for about an hour.

I can remember walking into the movie theatre and sitting down with my popcorn and pop. Eventually the lights darkened, the crowd fell silent, and the Star War theme song blasted over the crowd giving me goose bumps. Of course I was only 6, so I couldnt read the HUGE WORDS that came across the movie screen, but my aunt whispered what they said to me.

Eventually, the words went away and a large star ship slowly flew over the screen. I was so entranced, seeing a ship flying in space. I remember that was the moment that I wanted to become an astronaut, course I never did follow that dream.

Then the action started, men in white suits that I thought were robots ran around fighting other guys with these things called “lasers”. The guys in white, who I thought were the good guys won. I smiled and then ….

In walked the man in black, Lord Vader. I squished down in my chair, as I had a bad feeling about this guy. I grabbed my aunts hand when this Lord Vader bad guy, choked one of the men without touching them.

As I watched the rest of the movie, I fell in love with the idea of being Luke Skywalker. After all, he was just a kid like me right. I so wanted to be him, to swoop across on a swing line with a girl in my arms, to fight off bad guys with a “light saber sword”. I was so naive at that age …

My first day of school came shortly after seeing that movie. I remember getting on the school bus to go to school. I was so nervous, but the thought of being brave like Luke Skywalker helped me keep my nerves. I walked to the back of the bus, and sat down next to some kid who was quite a bit older then me, like by 5 years. All the kids on the back of the bus turned and looked at me, and said “Hey its a new kid. Whats your name new kid?”

This was my moment, I was trembling with fear, yet I had to be brave … brave like Luke Skywalker. Yes that was it.

    “Luke Skywalker” I replied.

Course every kid had seen the movie at that point. And they all knew it, which lead to me getting my ass kicked on that bus daily … from kidnegarten to 5th grade.
